Battery Guide

What is grid battery storage?

Large-scale batteries connected directly to the power grid, helping stabilize the system as renewable energy output fluctuates.

Grid battery storage systems are large-scale batteries connected directly to the electricity network, including power plants, transmission lines, substations, and distribution facilities. They are installed mainly to support stable supply and provide balancing capacity.

When electricity demand rises or renewable generation drops, stored power is discharged through the grid. This helps balance supply and demand, expand renewable energy adoption, and stabilize the power system.

Growing price spreads by time of day in electricity markets

As renewable energy expands, daytime electricity prices tend to fall, while prices often rise during evening peak demand. Charge-discharge operation that captures this spread is an important revenue source for grid battery investments.

Revenue Market

Three revenue markets for grid battery storage

Combining energy value, capacity value, and balancing value can improve revenue potential.

Grid battery
01

Wholesale Electricity Market (JEPX)

Charging when prices are low and discharging when prices are high
  • Trades on JEPX in 48 half-hour settlement periods each day
  • Charges when prices are low and discharges/sells when prices are high
  • Targets revenue through arbitrage trading

Utilizes the value of energy (kWh)

02

Balancing Market

Balancing market concept diagram
  • Provides balancing capacity to match supply and demand
  • Batteries can adjust charge/discharge output quickly, creating operational advantages
  • Responds to procurement needs of transmission and distribution operators

Balancing capacity (ΔkW) + energy (kWh)

03

Capacity Market

Capacity market concept diagram
  • Trades future supply capacity (kW), typically four years ahead
  • Receives capacity payments by providing supply capability
  • A long-term revenue opportunity supporting stable supply

Utilizes the value of capacity (kW)

Grid battery stations improve business potential by combining energy, balancing, and capacity values.

Aggregator

Aggregator selection
to maximize revenuecan determine project success.

Operation based on market prices, supply-demand conditions, and equipment characteristics increases opportunities in electricity trading.

Specialized power operation is essential

Grid battery business models are sensitive to regulations, market prices, and interconnection conditions. Selecting an aggregator with specialized operating capability is critical. We introduce candidates after reviewing track record and operating structure to improve business feasibility and investment visibility.

Aggregator criteria we review

  • Capability across spot, intraday, balancing, and capacity markets
  • Fee structures compared according to project conditions
  • Track record, operating know-how, capital strength, and service area reviewed
  • Target area, grid conditions, and market participation requirements checked in advance
For Buyers
